Robotic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic (STEM) Day Camp

On Saturday, August 4, 2012 the Greensboro Alumnae Delta Cultural Enrichment Center, Inc. (GADCEC) held its first Robotic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic (STEM) Day Camp at North Carolina A&T State University. Eighteen (18) male youth participated in this 6 hour learning experience. Breakfast and lunch were donated by local food vendors.

The ages of the participants ranged between 9-14 years. Mr. Donald McCoy, the STEM camp facilitator, placed the 18 young men in teams of five (5) and taught them to build, program, test, and perform a robot. They were exposed for the first time to engineering careers, organized problem-solving skills required for hands-on robotics building and programming, and teamwork.

At the end of the Day Camp, the parents were provided a performance of the five robots that were built by the students. Each participant was awarded a Certificate of Completion from North Carolina A&T State University’s College of Engineering – Engineering Academy. Dr. Marcia William, the Director of the College of Engineering Sponsored Programs, visited the Day Camp. The activity was extremely successful.
